Minimally invasive thoracoscopic approach for anterior decompression and stabilization of metastatic spine disease
Journal ArticleObject. The choices available in the management of metastatic spine disease are complex, and the role of surgical therapy is increasing. Recent studies have indicated that patients treated with direct surgical decompression and stabilization before radiation have better functional outcomes than those treated with radiation alone. The most common anterior surgical approach for direct spinal cord decompression and stabilization in the thoracic spine is open thoracotomy; however, thoracotomy for spinal access is associated with morbidity that can be avoided with minimally invasive techniques like thoracoscopy. Methods. A minimally invasive thoracoscopic approach was used for the surgical treatment of thoracic and thoracolumbar metastatic spinal cord compression. This technique allows ventral decompression via corpectomy, interbody reconstruction with expandable cages, and stabilization with an anterolateral plating system designed specifically for minimally invasive implantation. This technique was performed in 5 patients with metastatic disease of the thoracic spine, including the thoracolumbar junction. Results. All patients had improvement in preoperative symptoms and neurological deficits. No complications occurred in this small series. Conclusions. The minimally invasive thoracoscopic approach can be applied to the treatment of thoracic and thoracolumbar metastatic spine disease in an effort to reduce access morbidity. Preliminary results have indicated that adequate decompression, reconstruction, and stabilization can be achieved with this technique
Descriptors for Pentane-2,4-dione and Its Derivatives
We have used equations for partition coefficients of compounds from water and the gas phase to various solvents to obtain descriptors for pentane-2,4-dione and 21 of its derivatives. These descriptors can then be used to estimate further partition coefficients into a wide variety of solvents. The descriptors also yield information about the properties of pentane-2,4-dione and its derivatives. Pentane-2,4-dione and its alkyl derivatives are quite polar, with substantial hydrogen bond basicity but with no hydrogen bond acidity. In contrast 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione and hexafluoropentan-2,4-dione have significant hydrogen bond acidities

Browser-based Data Annotation, Active Learning, and Real-Time Distribution of Artificial Intelligence Models: From Tumor Tissue Microarrays to COVID-19 Radiology.
BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is fast becoming the tool of choice for scalable and reliable analysis of medical images. However, constraints in sharing medical data outside the institutional or geographical space, as well as difficulties in getting AI models and modeling platforms to work across different environments, have led to a "reproducibility crisis" in digital medicine. METHODS: This study details the implementation of a web platform that can be used to mitigate these challenges by orchestrating a digital pathology AI pipeline, from raw data to model inference, entirely on the local machine. We discuss how this federated platform provides governed access to data by consuming the Application Program Interfaces exposed by cloud storage services, allows the addition of user-defined annotations, facilitates active learning for training models iteratively, and provides model inference computed directly in the web browser at practically zero cost. The latter is of particular relevance to clinical workflows because the code, including the AI model, travels to the user's data, which stays private to the governance domain where it was acquired. RESULTS: We demonstrate that the web browser can be a means of democratizing AI and advancing data socialization in medical imaging backed by consumer-facing cloud infrastructure such as Box.com. As a case study, we test the accompanying platform end-to-end on a large dataset of digital breast cancer tissue microarray core images. We also showcase how it can be applied in contexts separate from digital pathology by applying it to a radiology dataset containing COVID-19 computed tomography images. CONCLUSIONS: The platform described in this report resolves the challenges to the findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable stewardship of data and AI models by integrating with cloud storage to maintain user-centric governance over the data. It also enables distributed, federated computation for AI inference over those data and proves the viability of client-side AI in medical imaging. AVAILABILITY: The open-source application is publicly available at , with a short video demonstration at
Sustainable bioethanol production combining biorefinery principles using combined raw materials from wheat undersown with clover-grass
To obtain the best possible net energy balance of the bioethanol production the biomass raw materials used need to be produced with limited use of non-renewable fossil fuels. Intercropping strategies are known to maximize growth and productivity by including more than one species in the crop stand, very often with legumes as one of the components. In the present study clover-grass is undersown in a traditional wheat crop. Thereby, it is possible to increase input of symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into the cropping systems and reduce the need for fertilizer applications. Furthermore, when using such wheat and clover-grass mixtures as raw material, addition of urea and other fermentation nutrients produced from fossil fuels can be reduced in the whole ethanol manufacturing chain. Using second generation ethanol technology mixtures of relative proportions of wheat straw and clover-grass (15:85, 50:50, and 85:15) were pretreated by wet oxidation. The results showed that supplementing wheat straw with clover-grass had a positive effect on the ethanol yield in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation experiments, and the effect was more pronounced in inhibitory substrates. The highest ethanol yield (80% of theoretical) was obtained in the experiment with high fraction (85%) of clover-grass. In order to improve the sugar recovery of clover-grass, it should be separated into a green juice (containing free sugars, fructan, amino acids, vitamins and soluble minerals) for direct fermentation and a fibre pulp for pretreatment together with wheat straw. Based on the obtained results a decentralized biorefinery concept for production of biofuel is suggested emphasizing sustainability, localness, and recycling principle
Production of a chromium Bose-Einstein condensate
The recent achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation of chromium atoms [1]
has opened longed-for experimental access to a degenerate quantum gas with
long-range and anisotropic interaction. Due to the large magnetic moment of
chromium atoms of 6 {}B, in contrast to other Bose- Einstein condensates
(BECs), magnetic dipole-dipole interaction plays an important role in a
chromium BEC. Many new physical properties of degenerate gases arising from
these magnetic forces have been predicted in the past and can now be studied
experimentally. Besides these phenomena, the large dipole moment leads to a
breakdown of standard methods for the creation of a chromium BEC. Cooling and
trapping methods had to be adapted to the special electronic structure of
chromium to reach the regime of quantum degeneracy. Some of them apply
generally to gases with large dipolar forces. We present here a detailed
discussion of the experimental techniques which are used to create a chromium
BEC and alow us to produce pure condensates with up to {} atoms in an
optical dipole trap. We also describe the methods used to determine the
trapping parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
Sprint interval and sprint continuous training increases circulating CD34+ cells and cardio-respiratory fitness in young healthy women
The improvement of vascular health in the exercising limb can be attained by sprint interval training (SIT).
However, the effects on systemic vascular function and on circulating angiogenic cells (CACs) which may contribute to endothelial repair have not been investigated. Additionally, a comparison between SIT and sprint continuous training (SCT) which is less time committing has not been made
In situ epitaxial MgB2 thin films for superconducting electronics
A thin film technology compatible with multilayer device fabrication is
critical for exploring the potential of the 39-K superconductor magnesium
diboride for superconducting electronics. Using a Hybrid Physical-Chemical
Vapor Deposition (HPCVD) process, it is shown that the high Mg vapor pressure
necessary to keep the MgB phase thermodynamically stable can be achieved
for the {\it in situ} growth of MgB thin films. The films grow epitaxially
on (0001) sapphire and (0001) 4H-SiC substrates and show a bulk-like of
39 K, a (4.2K) of A/cm in zero field, and a
of 29.2 T in parallel magnetic field. The surface is smooth with a
root-mean-square roughness of 2.5 nm for MgB films on SiC. This deposition
method opens tremendous opportunities for superconducting electronics using
